The board of supervisors in San Francisco, CA, recently (2003) decided to ban the use of Segway's two-wheel, battery-powered Human Transporters (HTs) on the city's sidewalks beginning January 20 due to concerns that the electric scooters will pose a threat to the safety of senior citizens and disabled persons.
Additionally, other cities in the San Francisco Bay area have begun considering measures to block the HTs from traveling on sidewalks. For instance, Santa Cruz may add the HTs to an ordinance banning electric bicycles on sidewalks in business districts.
